Groundbreaking in 2005, Relevant Today

A truly incredible amount of information is packed into the 120 pages of Xanthippe Augerot’s Atlas of Pacific Salmon. From a few miles of a single mountain river in Taiwan where landlocked yamame (Oncorhynchus masou) barely hold on, through the islands of Japan, north through Russia, across the Northern Pacific to Alaska and down to the mountains of Mexico where isolated populations of rainbow trout (O. mykiss) have yet to be fully described , dozens of excellent maps, charts, graphs and photographs is supported by Augerot's clear writing. An additional 23 pages of references and footnotes plus a user-friendly index add to this book’s value as a source for further exploration.

The seven salmon species of genus Oncorhynchus are treated: Masu (Cherry Salmon), Steelhead, Pink, Chum, Sockeye, Coho and Chinook. Although all (or virtually all) areas historically inhabited by Pacific salmon are touched on, the maps and text chiefly focus on Japan, China, Russia, Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California. The atlas is divided into six chapters: The Fish, The People, The Place, Distribution and Risk of Extinction, Threats to Biodiversity and Migration. Atlas of Pacific Salmon will be appreciated by specialists and laymen alike who share a keen interest in Pacific Salmon, their impact on human cultures and economies, their place in the ecosystem and their conservation.
